Colored Pencil Drawings September 2012

 Colored Pencil Drawings
Inspiration
Recently, I spent some time in San Diego with friends. We visited a local outdoor market/ swap mart and browsed for hours. We did not buy much , but I found a lot of inspiration in stands that were selling all kinds of dolls. I decided to go with colored pencils and am planning on doing a whole series. Surface used black drawing  paper.

Colored Pencils on Paper 2012 June

COLORED PENCILS - Work on paper

I guess, not having time to work in oil, made me think of other media. I found a pretty portable solution to my " art time crunch" by using colored pencils. I have always liked them but somehow never really produced"finished" pieces but more for sketching.

I enjoy the immediacy of mark making that colored pencils leave on paper and their linear, gestural quality. I decided to work on colored paper as well.  Inspiration came from my recent trips to Yuma and its antique and thrift store and their displays of dolls and trinkets.
 initial sketch

After some modeling with darker color,
I added white colored pencil
on a salmon-colored paper

Slowly, I have brought in
 some orange and red pigment
to warm up the image
To balance the values , I put some black colored
pencil for my darkest values and
layered it with red in some places.

I have a whole series in mind. Paper size is 9x12 inches and it has texture
(thus the little bumps you might see ).

NEW Original Watercolor on paper Works!

I have been slowly trying to paint more at home and using watercolor ( less prep and clean up) is the perfect way for me to get my feet wet. I have been teaching 4 classes a week this semester and being surrounded by creativity made me even more impatient.
