MCA 10x10 Benefit Show and Sale

This is my first time participating in the  MCA's 10x10 Benefit show. I was asked to create a 10x10 painting. My inspiration came from a trip to a tea room with a couple of girlfriends. I used the picture of my friend texting under the table...sounds familiar? Anyway, with her permission, I named the piece "Tea Time Sexting".

March Madness! Creating does not Stop!

 Creating Does Not Stop...
After a 30+-day break from blogging, I am back with some new pieces. It has been a challenging month with its ups and downs. I have been working on these smaller acrylic paintings after finishing a commissioned piece ( approx. 40x30in SEE Below).

"Feast" acrylic on paper 9x11 in 2010 $ 250

"Turkish Coffee" acrylic on paper 9x11in 2010 $250

"Pretty in Spring Time" acrylic on paper 11x9 in 2010 $250

" Another New Year" acrylic on  canvas approx. 40x30in 2010 NFS
(a commissioned piece)
The reason you see my feet in the photo is so you can see
the unique shape of the canvas. It is a coffee table top
with curved edges. It was a lot of fun to paint!

PROJECT #7 PAINTING IN ACRYLIC (step-by-step demo)

PROJECT #7 Step-by- Step Demonstration
Goth Queen  acrylic on paper
(detail 2010)

MATERIALS NEEDED:
1. Acrylic Paint (colors used: white, cerulean blue, phtalo blue, burnt umber, cad.red. cad. yellow & black)
2. palette (paper/ plastic plate will do for a smaller painting)
3. spray bottle to keep your paints moist
4. rags/ paper towel to clean brushes
5. brushes

  sketch in green watercolor pencil
( I picked green for no particular reason)
on gessoed paper

Working with diluted paint ( just add more water)
starting in the background working my way throughout
the painting. Look for larger shapes at this stage.
For example, the dark shadow next to her cheek.

Then  slowly build up skin tones
without going into too much detail at this stage.
As always I work my way up from the dark tones
to the light.

(face detail)
The wig is a fiery orange-red color.  I worked
with cad. red + aliz. crimson + lemon yellow+ cad. yellow
using multiple layers to achieve vibrancy.
The skin tones are leaning toward
cool  reds/pinks and purples.

For the scarecrow in the back I used a lot of cad. yellow
with red to make it orange. For highlights I added white to the
cad. yellow . Use sparingly.
The dark parts are a mix of phtalo blue+black.

Goth Queen acrylic on paper 11x9 in 2010 $225

The last thing I did was to add the highlights  ( almost pure
titanium white with a hint of pale blue) on the dress
and the jewelry.

blocking in big shapes 2009

Adding pale grey (cerulean+burnt umber+white)

keep the paint pile large so you can
mix from this same batch

Keep moving throughout the whole piece

The initial layers of paint are semi-transparent.
Use a little bit more of water at first.

Make the colors bolder. You may need
to put more than one layer of color
to achieve vibrancy.

Completed painting ( creating contrast at the end adds the finishing touches)

Oh, Tuesday, Tuesday...

On thisTuesday, August 25th 2009, I am thinking of my next project. My morning class Color Wheel did not make
it due to low enrollment. There are only 2 days left of my residency at the Civic Center Library. I will be packing up on Thursday. There is something about things ending that does not really put me into a mood to create...Original Artwork...Art classes...Inspiration...

Having had 3 days off from painting leads me to a slow start this morning. A hot steamy latte gave me the push I needed. First things first, scraping off my palette, trying to keep paint out of my clothes ( impossible) , mixing color ( 15 minutes at least) all the while listening to a book on tape, Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. Who says that starting painting is a simple task?
